Anatomical Studies on the Auditory Ossicular Chain in Koreans

Abstract
The author carried out the direct measurement of the anatomical and physiological important parts of the auditory ossicles in Koreans with chemical steelyard and microcaliper, using the materials of the auditory ossicles obtained from both temporal bones of 185 cases (infant 163, adult 22) fixed in 10% formalin solution for over 6 months. Then the author discussed the statistical significance of the mean values of the various items between infant and adult.
The conclusions obtained from this study were as follows:
1) All three auditory ossicles gained in weight from the time of infancy to adulthood. Of three auditory ossicles, the incus increased in weight most remarkably, the malleus next in order, and the stapes only slightly.
2) The long axis and the lateral process of the malleus both increased in length from infancy to adult., but the length of the anterior process of the malleus did not change.
3) Both the long and short limbs of the incus increased in length remarkably, but the lenticular process remained the same.
4) Both the anterior and posterior crus of the stapes increased in length, while the foot-plate remained unchanged.
5) All three auditory ossicles gained from infancy to adulthood, the incus showing the greatest increase, the stapes the last and the malleus intermediate between the other two.
